Serve: the word

I found myself back in the dictionary again tonight, this time looking up the word Serve.  As always, God is faithful to bring to mind what He wants to show me.  Webster’s New World Dictionary provides the following definition for the word Serve:

  • to work for as a servant
  • to do services for, aid, help
  • to do military or naval service for
  • to spend (a term of imprisonment) [ex. to serve 10 years]
  • to provide with goods or service
  • to set food before (a person)
  • to meet the needs of
  • to be used by
  • to function for [if memory serves me well]
  • to deliver something to
  • to hit (a ball) in order to start play

Again, as I look at these words, I see Christ.  I see Him

For me to be able to Serve, in any capacity that God puts me, I must follow Christ.  “If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.”  (John 12:26, New Inductive Study Bible, New American Standard Version, Heritage House Publishers)  I accomplish that by spending time with Him in His Word, preparing my heart to serve.  Not necessarily in all the ways that Christ served as the above definition indicates, but as one who is to be Salt and Light to the world.  As one who can serve others by loving them, helping them, and guiding them.  As one who Follows 2 Serve

That sure brings a lot more to the word “serve” than what we usually think about it, doesn’t it?

Thanks for adding my button! It looks great!
